English 2/English 3 students will encounter some of the great stories of English Literature, from Beowulf to Animal Farm. Along the way, they will learn how to write about literature, and will try their hand at some author imitation and creative writing. The year culminates with a “Book vs. Film” project.
Prerequisite: Students must read at a 10th-grade level, and must have foundational high school writing skills (i.e., write an excellent paragraph). If you are unsure about your student’s reading or writing level, please contact the instructor.
Ms. Starr, I’m confused! Is this English 2 or English 3? Yes! If you took English 2 with me last year, you’ll take this class for 2025-2026 as English 3. English 2 and English 3 will both study the same literature, but expectations and writing assignments will be different depending on whether you are taking English 2 or English 3.
English 2 and 3 will cycle between American and English literature. Each year we will read a different set of literature and have a different writing focus. You can note these as “English 2” and “English 3” on your transcript, if you prefer. For the 2025-2026 school year we will read English literature. In 2026-2027 we will read American literature.
Homework: Students will have reading and writing assignments every week and should expect to spend 3 hours a week on this class.
