Course Description:
The Elementary American Sign Language (ASL) class for grades 4-5 is designed to introduce young learners to the fundamentals of ASL, fostering communication skills in a fun, interactive, and inclusive environment. Students will explore the basics of ASL vocabulary, grammar, and cultural aspects, with an emphasis on hands-on learning, and building empathy through language.
Throughout the course, students will learn essential signs for everyday communication, including greetings, introductions, colors, numbers, family members, and emotions. They will also engage in activities that promote understanding of Deaf culture, its history, and the importance of accessibility in communication.
Key Learning Objectives:
- Learn and use basic ASL signs for daily communication.
- Develop the ability to introduce themselves and have simple conversations.
- Understand basic ASL grammar and sentence structure.
- Explore Deaf culture, community values, and traditions.
- Gain confidence in expressing ideas through visual and non-verbal communication.
