Description: Description:  Fairy tales are something we all know, or think we know, but rarely have the opportunity to study in depth.  In this class, we will explore the fairy tale throughout history. Then, we’ll learn about the development of the fantasy genre as we know it and examine the ways contemporary authors have taken inspiration from the fairy tale tradition.

Grades: 9th-12th

Duration: Year long

Required Materials:

Fall Semester:

  • Teacher-provided packet
  • The Blue Fairy Book* by Andrew Lang
  • The Red Fairy Book* by Andrew Lang
  • The Golden Key* by George MacDonald (This edition is recommended but not required: https://www.amazon.com/Golden-Key-Sunburst-Book/dp/0374425906)
  • The Book of Wonder* by Lord Dunsany
    *Available in the public domain.  I would encourage you to get a hard copy if possible, but you can also access PDFs online.

Spring Semester:

  • The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander

  • The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle

  • Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

  • The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett

  • A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. LeGuin

Additional One-Time Material Fee: $20

Monthly Class Fee: $65

Homework:  Students should plan on 2-4 hours of reading time per week. Each semester, students will have two optional writing assignments, one creative and one analytical.

Minimum/Maximum # of Students: Minimum 2 students, maximum 12.
